Gang violence is increasing in Cuba, leading to concerns. According to multiple sources including the British Broadcasting Corporation and St Kitts and Nevis Observer, there are rising gang activities including violence in Cuba —though it is still not widespread — leading to the deaths of many and public insecurity. It is notable that gang activities including gang violence have been on the rise for several years while 2023 was the year in which criminality began to be recognized as a problem in Cuba, which has traditionally been among the safest nations in the Americas. Given that steps are not taken…
Product boycott — often a form of protest — takes place in many countries. According to multiple sources including the BBC and CNN, Israeli products were boycotted by several Muslim countries for its war on Hamas. But this is not the only event of product boycotts. Along with the boycotts of products in several other countries including the Montgomery Bus Boycott during the Civil Rights Movement, where African Americans refused to use segregated buses, the products of many companies were also boycotted in the past within the state and in other states including the Nestle boycott in the 1970s and…
The deportation of migrants is a crucial problem. The deportation of migrants takes place from different countries including the Dominican Republic, leading to negative outcomes including deaths. In the latest deportation attempts, according to multiple sources including the BBC and CNN, the Dominican Republic, which expelled displaced migrants earlier, plans to deport up to 10,000 undocumented migrants came from Haiti a week to combat uncontrolled migration. While this may improve the conditions of the host country by reducing the burden of refugees, this will put migrants in trouble in Haiti, which has been in crisis because of the rising gang…
The killing of Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah has increased tensions involving several countries including Israel, Lebanon and Iran. According to multiple sources including the BBC and CNN, Israeli strikes killed the Hezbollah leader and many others and have by this time resulted in the displacement of hundreds of thousands from Lebanon. In retaliation, Iran carried out missile attacks on Israel. Israel has begun the ground invasion of Lebanon and told to retaliate against Iranian strikes, while Iran warned of further actions if attacked, leading to the possibility of an all-out war. But a pertinent aspect is whether any all-out war…
Political arrests, killings and abductions have turned out to be a concern in Tanzania, which has made several notable economic successes including surging investment. According to multiple sources including the BBC and Citizen, Ali Mohamed Kibao, a high-profile political leader of the main opposition Chadema (Party for Democracy and Progress), was abducted and killed this month in Tanzania. Additionally, many leaders of Chadema and ACT-Wazalendo —including two senior opposition leaders — were arbitrarily arrested in Dar es Salaam, Iringa, Dodoma and Rukwa, several leaders were killed and opposition political rallies and internal opposition meetings were banned. But the crackdown on opposition…
The approval of a new law in Mexico’s Senate for the election of the judges, which was earlier passed in the lower chamber, has led to protests. According to multiple sources including the BBC and CNN, the reformation requires the judges to be elected by popular vote — rather than be appointed — in Mexico. Under the new system, judges, magistrates and, even, Supreme Court justices will have to stand for popular election. Protesters carried out demonstrations against the reform, which has the backing of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador. But it remains doubtful whether the reformed law, which has led to…
The transitional government in Bangladesh — formed after the ouster of the Awmi League government through the mass uprisings — is going to make reforms in economic, political and other sectors. According to multiple sources including the ANN and South Asian Times, the interim government will form six reform commissions including the Constitution Reform Commission, Judicial Reform Commission and Election Reform Commission to carry out reforms, needed and demanded by the uprising students and mass, political parties and others. This is definitely a praiseworthy move and has the potential to help address challenges and bring positive outcomes in economic, social, political and…
Suicide is rising in Lesotho, leading to concerns. According to multiple sources including the BBC and CNN, the suicide rate has been on the rise in Lesotho for years. The rising suicide rate in Lesotho — around ninety deaths in every 100000 people (almost 10 times the global average) which is the highest of all countries — not only leads to the loss of valuable lives of more people but also brings economic, social and other impacts in Lesotho, which has been facing economic and other challenges for decades. Without strengthened efforts, it may be difficult to successfully fight the worsening suicide…
Media freedom is limited in Senegal, leading to concerns. Media has been facing its darkest times for several years. According to multiple sources including the BBC and CNN, years of attacks on media freedom led to protests last month. Though the government — formed after the 2024 Presidential Election — says it has carried out the media crackdown justifying it as an attempt to address the practices of financial embezzlement and mismanagement in the media industry, protesters say that the new government is shrinking media freedom, which was already shrunk by the previous government. Pertinently saying, Senegal slipped from 49th to 94th…
Political problems are one of the main problems in Bangladesh. Political problems include holding power by hook or by crook, the manipulation of elections, cadre politics and the intention to demolish opposition parties. It is — consequently — related to many other problems including, but not limited to, corruption, the mismanagement of resources, party-based recruitment, the politicization of government institutions and extortion, leading to concerns. To be fair, diverse political problems are not created by any single political party rather many parties have contributed to such problems somehow. Hopefully saying, there are various ways to address various political problems and the culture…
